Concept Attainment model is a teaching model designed to help students of all ages elaborate and reinforce their understanding of concepts and practice critical thinking.
reflection of in-class model
The Elementary group that did their lesson on concept attainment was on phonics and the short e sound. I thought the group was well organized and well prepared to teach their lesson. I liked the hook of the guessing game for the students to figure out what sound they wanted them to recognize. I also felt they had many examples and non-examples to help the students come to the correct conclusion and had it set up nice with the yes and no column. If I was teaching this lesson I would have maybe had my students sitting at their desks instead of on the mat so their would have been more room.
LEsson PLans and Reflections
The first concept attainment lesson plan was a fifth grade math lesson teaching the difference between prime and composite numbers. The instructor first establishes how this teaching method works and then gives a list of examples and non-examples. This lesson deviates from the implementing process by starting off with a math warm-up. I think this is a good idea just to get the students brains working. If I was teaching this lesson I would closely follow the method they used because they did a great job of breaking down each example and non-example and asking for a hypothesis.
The second concept attainment model was a lesson plan for a second grade science class. The topic was being able to determine a liquid from other forms. This lesson plan also followed the guidelines fairly well by listing examples and non-examples of liquids and asking each time for a hypothesis of what the students thought the concept was. This lesson also helps to teach what solids are as well. I liked how both group work and independent work were incorporated into this lesson. If I was teaching this lesson to a second grade class, I would have brought in different examples and non- examples of liquids. I think using visuals is beneficial for helping students to understand and also to not forget certain topics.
