Discussion is an instructional strategy that involves students sharing ideas about a common topic.
Reflection Of in-class MOdel
The discussion model demonstrated in class was done for secondary for a history lesson. I thought this group did very well at asking critical thinking and debatable questions to get the students involved. I liked the fact that they asked the students if they agreed or disagreed and had them move to one side of the classroom or the other. I think they planned well and also managed to keep the debate under control. They followed the guidelines needed to complete the discussion model and had a very good debate discussion during their lesson.
reflections and lesson plans For discussion
The first lesson plan I found was a lesson on stereotyping. During the instruction part, the instructor starts by asking what a cookie cutter is and what is the purpose. This gets the students to understand they are used to make every cookie look the exactly the same. At this point an activity takes place called Eye grouping. The students are asked to group themselves by some visual similarity that they see between them and others in the class. The next step is the discussion where the class talks about why they grouped themselves the way they did and what were the differences. The closure of the model ends with the review of why stereotyping is a negative thing and that no one person is a like. I think this lesson was well planned and is a very effective lesson that all students should know. It followed the steps very closely and covered all the main points. If I was to teach this in my classroom I would bring in cookie cutters and cookie dough to demonstrate the point I was trying to make about the cookie cutter concept.
The second lesson plan that uses the Discussion model was on the topic of what is reading. Students were asked to write down what they thought on a notecard, and then the teacher put all of the responses together. I liked the idea of sharing everyone's ideas anonymously because sometimes some students are afraid to speak up and participate. This model deviates from its original structure with the incorporation of group work. The students construct a definition as a group after the discussion. I like the modification to this model and would use it in my classroom because I am a firm believer in group activities.
