Direct instruction is a model that uses teacher demonstration and explanation combined with student practice and feedback to help learners acquire well-defined knowledge and skills needed for later learning.
reflection of in-class model
Me and my partner did the Elementary implementation of direct instruction for a math lesson on counting tens with ones left over. I feel we covered all the four phases in this model very well and gave the students plenty of guidance and practice with our content. A problem we ran into was we kind of had two guided practices rather than an independent practice. The students were struggling more than we anticipated on the independent practice worksheets. I think we planned well but need to be more aware of the use of technology. Overall I think for our fist time making a lesson plan and implementing it we did fairly well.
The secondary implementation of direct instruction was also for a math lesson. I felt that the instructor for this lesson was very knowledgeable of the content he taught on slope intercept form, and I thought he also followed the four phases that the model suggests. He gave the students the instruction and then allowed for guided and independent practice. I think I would have tried to incorporate a hook or an attention grabber for this lesson to make it a little more interesting.

Lesson PLans and Reflection
The first lesson plan for direct instruction is on telling time. I think that this is a great lesson plan and intend on using it in my class. I love how this lesson plan has a lot of student involvement and feedback and follows all four of the implementations of direct instruction. It uses great examples that teachers can use in class to help young children understand the concept of telling time. I might ask the students to wear a watch that day just so they could each have a clock and we could work on telling time off of their own watches.I think it is very important to find ways to make direct instruction as interesting and engaging as possible so students can stay focused.
The second lesson plan for direct instruction is a 6th grade math lesson on improper fractions and mixed numbers. This model too follows the four steps outlined for direct instruction. The teacher focuses attention by asking questions about the previous lesson and then see what they know about the new content already. The teacher then presents and models the content and assesses student feedback. Next, the teacher allows them to independently practice to see what each student knows and understands. This lesson plan does present good questions to ask students at the beginning of the lesson. I would maybe try to think of a better attention grabber or something to really get the students interested in the topic if I taught this lesson in my classroom.
